Shuttle Landing Facility (SLF) ATCT

and Press Room Design

NASA, Kennedy Space Center, Florida

AJT sited and designed a state-of-the-art Airport Traffic Control Tower (ATCT) and base building to replace the existing structures at Kennedy Space Center.  The new 7 story, 73 foot (cab floor height) tower design includes a controller lounge, restrooms, a communications equipment room, weather observation station, equipment support area, offices and a handicapped-accessible elevator.

The design includes a base building that houses a VIP lounge and press room.  A two-deck modernized viewing platform for television production and reporters was designed to be built over the base building.  The ATCT complies with the general guidelines and fundamental requirements of Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and United States Air Force directives.  AJT was responsible for the engineering, plan development, construction management support, survey and geotechnical investigation.

AJT sited the structures so that they will not interfere with telemetry equipment, military radar units and the differential GPS systems that guide the shuttle.  AJT installed a 3 position ATC and 1 position remote Air Traffic Control Communications system, VCCS, voice recorder, extensive ground network and air to ground radios integrating both analogue and digital channels.
